From Homecoming King, To Homeschooling Dad - Part 6: My Help Meet

As you saw in Part 5 of this blog series, God has blessed me with four beautiful children. These children could not have made it into this world though without my wife, Colleen. Having just celebrated Mother's Day, I shared with my children that very fact. The Bible says to honor your father and mother (Ephesians 6:2) and we were spending an entire day thanking Mommy for all she does for us. I told my children that they wouldn't even be here in this world had not their Mommy carried them for nine long months. However before Colleen labored four children into this world, she first became my help meet.

In Genesis 2:18, it is said, "And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him." This here shows that God planned and created the family. Genesis further states,  "And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh" (23-24). God specifically created woman from man in order to be his companion for life. And from day one of our marriage, this is exactly what Colleen has been for me.

Many people seem to think this is a negative thing towards women, however this is far from the truth. You see, if people would just trust in God and His truth, knowledge, and wisdom, then one can easily see that this design for a family is the most beneficial. For example, Colleen has helped me more than any person on this earth second to Jesus Christ. In fact, I tell people if we ever start talking about marriage that second to my salvation through Jesus Christ, marrying Colleen was (and still is) the best choice I ever made. Her being my wife, my companion, and my help meet has provided a strength in me that I didn't realize I needed until we were married.

Years ago, as I have described previously, I had a lot of stomach issues. These stomach issues began to surface about a year before Colleen and I got married. I will never forget as we were saying our vows to each other on November 8, 2003 in front of our family and friends, when the part came that said, "in sickness and in health". We both smiled at each other since we were already experiencing the sickness part. I recall two weeks after we were married, Colleen's aunt said to me, "Michael, you look like you are doing much better health-wise." I promptly responded, "That is because I married Colleen. Ever since we got married I have felt better." Honestly, my soul already had the Lord Jesus Christ dwelling within in and all that was left to fill it up was Colleen. Talk about a help meet! Colleen through her love and devotion to me helped me to be restored in body and in spirit.

Through the years since we have been married, Colleen has always been a help meet to me. She has always supported me, defended me, loved me, encouraged me, taught me, set me straight when I required it (and I need it - believe me), and blessed me. I do my best to love her as Christ loved the church - being willing to give my life for her if necessary, however sometimes I feel she does better! She is so giving that she gives of herself for the better of others, especially me as her husband and for her four children. I only hope I can be the husband to her as God has called me to be. I know I will try with the Lord's help!

The union God ordained long ago in the Garden of Eden between Adam and Eve is still sacred today and I am thankful I can share in that same union that God ordained, called marriage, with the love of my life! Without her, I would be HELPLESS!

Colleen and I on our wedding day!
